Heritage Co-op will Amalgamate with Strathclair Co-op

Members of Heritage Co-op and Strathclair Co-op have approved the resolution to amalgamate the two Co-ops into one Cooperative that will continue to operate as Heritage Co-op 1997 Ltd.

“We’ll be better together,” said Heritage Co-op General Manager, Lorne Zacharias. “Strathclair complements the areas that we are already working in, both geographically and in terms of commodities served. It’s a great fit”

Strathclair Co-op held a general membership meeting on October 29, 2018 to vote on the resolution to approve the amalgamation. Members voted 97.9% in favour of the resolution. The 2.1% who did not vote in favour turned in spoiled ballots.

Members of Heritage Co-op held their membership meeting on October 30, 2018. The members approved the resolution with 100% of the votes being in favour of the amalgamation.

“Co-ops were built on the concept of working together to help serve their communities better. That principle remains at the heart of this partnership.” said Valerie Collins, General Manager of Strathclair Co-op. “This amalgamation will give us the strength and capital to be able to grow and make existing operations stronger.”

The new Co-op, under the name of Heritage Co-op, includes all Heritage Co-op locations (four food stores, one pharmacy, two home centres, six gas bars, five cardlocks and two ag sites) as well as all Strathclair locations (one ag site, one home centre, and one cardlock) in six communities. 

Both co-operatives have an extensive history serving the members in their respective communities. Focusing on investing locally and giving back, the commitment to communities will only be strengthened as a result of the partnership.

The Board and Management are very pleased with both the results and support from our members and will proceed to complete the necessary steps to amalgamate the two Co-ops into one entity and continue to provide quality goods and services to our members. The amalgamation will take effect on December 30, 2018.
