Serving Up Success: The Food Manager Trainee Program
ActionsIf you’re looking to build a career in Food Store Management, Heritage Co-op’s Food Manager Trainee program offers a rewarding, multifaceted experience. Two recent trainees, Vicky and Camilla, share what drew them to the program, the skills they gained, and the worthwhile challenges that came with this opportunity.
One of the most unique aspects of the Food Manager Trainee program is the opportunity to work across different departments. Camilla, Grocery Manager at Rivers Food Store, describes this as an invaluable experience, saying, “The whole experience of getting taught in all departments within Heritage Co-op… I found that interesting.” Vicky echoed this, sharing that she loved “getting the opportunity to work in multiple departments and locations. This gave me the chance to see how other locations do things and adapt these procedures …in a way that works best for us.”
During the program, both Vicky and Camilla gained a wide range of skills. Vicky mentions, “Every time I turned around, there was a learning experience to be had and a new skill to home in on.” This exposure to hands-on learning helped her manage the many responsibilities of her current Grocery Manager role at Erickson Food Store. Camilla, who took pride in continuously improving herself, emphasized, “I think I gained a lot of people skills by having to work with a new team every four weeks.”
A supportive learning environment is essential for growth, and Heritage Co-op’s program fosters that by connecting Program Trainees with experienced Managers. Vicky highlighted how important networking was, saying, “I still reach out to those I trained with for answers and opinions.” Camilla, too, appreciates the mentorship she received, stating, “We have a lot of good Team Leaders in our organization who I can contact for assistance and help.”
Heritage Co-op’s program focuses on trainee growth by offering varied experiences. Camilla was surprised by “how many things a Manager [goes] through; there is not two days that are the same.” This dynamic aspect makes the role exciting and keeps trainees engaged. Vicky also found that the constant variety in her work was fulfilling, saying, “As a Grocery Manager in a small location, you wear many different hats daily.”
Camilla encourages anyone considering the program to “Go for it! I have not regretted my decision at all. This program opened so many doors and challenges for me.” Vicky offers practical advice, recommending that new trainees “Write everything down. Ask all the questions, no matter how dumb you think they may be.” By taking this approach, Vicky discovered a new interest in Centre Store operations, something she hadn’t anticipated.
Heritage Co-op’s Food Manager Trainee program equips you with the skills, experience, and connections to excel in the food management industry. Whether you’re aiming for a leadership role or simply wish to learn more about food operations, Vicky and Camilla’s experiences show that the program is more than just training—it’s an adventure of growth and discovery.
